In 1885, Bessemer City was founded on the Black Warrior River. The city was named after Nicholas Bessemer, an American industrialist and entrepreneur who donated land to the city. In 1889, Bessemer became a state capital and in 1907 it became the seat of government for Alabama. At that time, Bessemer had a population of around 45,000 people. By 1920, the population had grown to over 100,000 people and by 1930 it reached 300,000 people. During World War II, Bessemer was one of two cities in Alabama that were not destroyed by bombing during the war effort. On July 22nd 1944, Allied bombers dropped 2 million rounds of ammunition on downtown Bessemer causing extensive damage including loss of many buildings and injuries to many people. Today, downtown is a popular tourist destination with its rich history and architecture.

Bessemer, the founder of the Bessemer steel industry. The town is located on the Flint River, east of Huntsville and north of Tuscaloosa. Bessemer's history goes back to 1834 when General James K. Bessemer founded the town in order to produce steel for his new Bessemer Steel Company. The first blast furnace was built in 1835 and production began that year. By 1840, the company had produced over 1 million tons (approximately 10 metric tons) of steel products including forgings, rails, and ships anchors. In 1848, general Bessemer donated land to build a college which would become Tuskegee University; this donation made Bessemer one of Alabama's most important towns until recently. The population of Bessemer increased rapidly during World War II due to wartime manufacturing opportunities; during that time, Bessemer became known as "the Arsenal of America" for its production of war materials such as tanks and aircraft engines. Bessemer is a small town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Escambia County. Bessemer was founded by African Americans in 1855 as "Montgomery" after they were driven out of Montgomery, Alabama by white mobs. The name "Bessemer" originated from Captain John Bessemer's purchase of land here in 1821. Coalmining began in the area and production peaked around 1925; however, with the advent of automated methods and the decline of coal mining throughout much of North America, Bessemer's industry eventually went extinct. The town was originally built on an area now known as Vestavia Hills which became nearly unpopulated due to development and growth within neighboring Montgomery. Development began again around 1960 when a new shopping center was completed adjacent to the old courthouse square. Prior to this time, all settlement took place outside the city limits which made for a more isolated environment for residents but also allowed for more efficient transportation between town and county services. Today, Bessemer remains primarily a residential community with limited commercial activity or tourist attractions; however it has seen some redevelopment over recent years including an effort to bring retail development back into town Center which failed due to lack of support from local officials who felt that such an endeavor would only stunt economic growth and represent a negative impact on the quality of life for residents.
