The Bessemer Company was founded in 1868 by John F. Bessemer and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson. The company became known for manufacturing Railroad ties and other items related to the railways. In 1907, the company merged with two other companies to form the Alabama State Coal Company. The company continued to produce railroad ties until it ceased operations in 1951.
