Bessemer is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 18,873 at the 2010 census. Bessemer is the county seat of Jefferson County. It is the largest city in Jefferson County and the second-largest city in Alabama after Tuscaloosa. The population of Bessemer increased from 3,957 at the 2000 census to 17,521 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Bessemer was James Aiken who arrived on July 4, 1814 with his family from Georgia. He founded a cabin known as Aiken's Landing on Mobile Bayou which he named for himself and his father-in-law John Aiken (1775-1847). James Aiken had two sons: George Washington Aiken (1815-1892) who followed his father into business and shipbuilding, and Hiram J. Ayres (1819-1900) who was also successful in business before dying at age 83 years old in 1910. Lloyd Waddell came to town on December 12th 1830 with his brother John Waddell from North Carolina and their families settling around what became known as "the Wagon Wheel." They were joined by others soon thereafter including Nathaniel Prentiss (November 10 1840 – January 20 1916), Elijah Whitehead (January 16 1841 – May 9 1904), John Forrestal (October 8 1842 – October 25 1922), Daniel Boone Ford (August 6 1843 – February 2 1912), Uriah Greenleaf Bridger(January 14 1850 – ?)Moses Greene(September 24 1861 – ?)Richard Bryant(April 15 1865 - ?)and others during this time period that would contribute to what would becomeknown as Bessemer City Limits today! In 1853 Judge Amos Fortune opened up land north of present day Bessemer along Mobile River within present day downtown limits becoming one of earliest developers of that area! At this time it consisted mostly of swampy woods with occasional houses or outbuildings scattered here and there! Many people relocated to this area during these early days including many soldiers stationed at Fort Pillow during the American Civil War many coming just for a year or so then moving on again when hostilities ended! A few years later an interchange station was built near present day Cantrell Avenue and Third Street making travel between those towns much easier for residents! This allowed travelers seeking goods or services either way to do so without having to go all the way through Birmingham or Tuscaloosa! In 1860 a bridge was built over Mobile River linking downtown Bessemer with Cantrell Avenue providing access for more people and businesses! In 1865 local resident Richard Bryant erected a large frame house on Fourth Street becoming home base for several businesses until 1901 when he sold it resulting in its current form today! One can still find some remnants of this early structure such as part of its original foundation remaining underneathcurrent street conditions! additionally another early building still stands vacant but potentially habitable inside: it may be interested anyone looking into purchasing/recovery thereof given its condition currently

Bessemer is a city in Hardin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Bessemer was founded on December 12, 1814 by Nicholas Bessemer and his family as a small community on the river below present-day downtown Bessemer. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location near two important Iron ore mines - the Pickering mine and the Clinch mine - and its status as a stop on stagecoach routes through central Alabama. In 1868, resident James Hensley organized what became known as "The Oldtimers" Club to promote tourism in Old Tuscaloosa County and started marketing local attractions such as waterfalls and historical sites around town. By 1903, when it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Bessemer had become one of Alabama's most popular tourist destinations with visitors coming from all over America to see its unique history and culture. Bessemer experienced significant growth following World War II when military production resumed in nearby Mobile Bay Area; resulting in an influx of new residents who helped transform downtown into an vibrant shopping district complete with major department stores and restaurants. Today, much of downtown has been preserved including original brick buildings dating back to 1814-1817 that are now part of the Hardin County Courthouse Annexes Complex; while other historic districts have been renovated or redeveloped into mixed-use streetscape neighborhoods characterized by large blocks of office space occupying entire blocks within walking distance of each other (e.g., Downtown Square). Many classic architecture features still remain common throughout downtown including gingerbread houses built between 1870s-1880s by German immigrants working for local ironmasters;modeled after Friedrich Wilhelm Landau's designs for Frankfurt am Main's Hasseltstadt district – one example being erected at 501 S Washington Street just past present day First Avenue Southwest inside today's Huntsville LGBT Services Building located adjacent to Yesler Regional Medical Center which opened in 1990 adjacent to Parkwood Mall which was completed in 1997 following a combined effort by Mayor Don Lightfoot (D)and then Congressman John Dingell (D) – both members then representing Michigan’s 5th congressional district covered portions of northeast Mobile Bay Area including Bessemer’s core business area Today many businesses continue where they began like Beasley Funeral Home which traces its roots back to 1865 when John Beasley opened his first funeral home across from where he currently resides It should be noted that not all businesses associated with downtown have thrived since 2000 however many old favorites like Beasley Funeral Home have continued operations successfully unchanged for over 100 years
