Bessemer is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what became Bessemer were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild game near the confluence of Mobile and Tennessee Rivers. They built their homes from logs that they floated down the rivers on rafts. Eventually, other colonists arrived, bringing their boats and tools with them to start a new life in what would become Bessemer. During America's Civil War, Bessemer was one of many Confederate cities that chose not to fight and secede from the Union side. However, it remained an important center for manufacturing during Reconstruction after the war. In 1881, General George Custer fought his last battle at nearby Fort Donelson before being captured by Union forces and executed; this event helped spur development in nearby Decatur as businesses began shipping food supplies to Fort Donelson from Bessemer. In 1905, construction started on Thebes Municipal Stadium which would serve as home field for both local collegiate teams (Alabama Crimson Tide/Athletic Association) as well as professional football team (the Baltimore Colts). Construction continued until 1928 when it was replaced by Legion Field which served as home field for both local high school teams (Alabamian High School/Birmingham-Jefferson County Junior College) as well as professional football team (the Detroit Lions). The original Legion Field stadium still stands today and can accommodate up to 100,000 spectators. After World War II ended, business activity slowed down in downtown Bessemer while industry shifted away towards south Alabama due to new technology being developed here such as aluminum production starting in earnest around 1958 called "The Aluminum Age." This led to downtown becoming a largely commercial area known today for its shopping mall complexes such as Sears Tower and Selfridges department store complex along with numerous restaurants including Olive Garden which opened its second location here in 1974 after moving from Birmingham-Hoover decades earlier!

Bessemer is an Alabama city located in the Lower Alabama region of the US state of Alabama. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. Bessemer is one of the few American cities founded as a cotton plantation town and has been continuously inhabited since 1809. The original name for the town was "Newbern." The first settler in what is now Bessemer was Major John Newbern, who arrived in 1785 with his family from North Carolina. He organized a militia regiment to fight against Indian attacks in what is now eastern Jefferson County. Newbern's grandson, Captain John Newton, became the first blacksmith in Bessemer when he built a forge on Third Street in 1827. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson ordered all slaveholders throughout Georgia to free their slaves by March 1, or face military action. Many slaveowners decided to comply and began to free their slaves within days of Jackson's order. This event led to increased tension between white and black people in Georgia and southern Alabama. In response to this situation, Colonel George Washington ordered John Newton Jr.'s father-in-law Drury (a Methodist minister) to begin construction of a Masonic Lodge at Third and Spring Streets in downtown Bessemer on October 26, 1836 A group of African Americans who had left Mobile for fear that they would be free if they returned home formed this lodge as part of their efforts to protect themselves from possible violence or abuse while living under white rule. The lodge still meets today and enjoys wide support from locals and visitors alike due its educational programming about African American history during Reconstruction period which takes place every year during Black History Month
