The Bessemer area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to explore the area were the French in 1795 and they named it after Besséheim, a town in France. By 1800, there were three small villages in what is now Bessemer County: Italian, Indian, and German. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and he ordered all military units to leave Tennessee because of the Mexican-American War. The Spanish located along the Gulf coast abandoned their settlements in that region which allowed African Americans to set up shops and businesses. They began buying land from Spanish settlers in Alabama and Georgia as well as Mexico. By 1840, white men had established themselves throughout most of present-day Alabama including Bessemer County with a few scattered sites such as Iuka City and Tuscaloosa (now Montgomery). In 1846, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, his cabinet included John C. Fremont as Secretary of War. On July 4th that year, Fremont issued an order that all Federal troops must leave Texas because of war with Mexico over slavery issues. A large force under General Zachary Taylor advanced on Texarkana but encountered resistance from Confederate forces led by General Braxton Bragg at San Jacinto River Bridge on November 6th 1861 near present day Huntsville (Ala.). At about 1 PM CST on November 7th 1861 Union soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet counted 138 dead or captured Confederate soldiers followed by 94 wounded after moving through thick brush for two hours negotiating a crossing point about eleven miles downstream from where the battle occurred; this event is known as “the Battle of San Jacinto” due to its location within Alabamian history textbooks today. Aftermath show more than 150 men dead including long-time owner/operator of old mill Isaac Jones who lost both legs above knee while attempting to flee across bridge; total loss for Confederate side was estimated at $5 million dollars ($102 million adjusted) making it one of America’s largest slave rebellions up until thensome $8 billion (adjusted) since 1865 alone

Bessemer is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 10,895 at the 2010 census. Bessemer is the county seat of Marshall County. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first mention of Bessemer was by General Andrew Jackson on a map in 1824 as "Bessesborough". He named it for Samuel Beal, an Englishman who had settled in Mobile Bay and married a local woman. Beal's son, also named Samuel Beal, built the first school in what is now Bessemer in 1827. In 1829, John Crain established what became known as the First National Bank of Bessemer and served as its president from 1876 to 1893. The town was incorporated on March 3, 1881; it was named for Honorable Augustus Ewing Bessemer (1820-1896), chairman of the Michigan Central Railroad Company and one of its incorporators and directors during its early years. The original town plat included four blocks square with a central avenue running east-west through it. A post office operated under this name until December 1, 1886 when it changed to Bessesborough post office after being moved from Montgomery to Marshall County because that county had no other post office within its borders larger than 5 miles wide). In 1911 JT Frazier opened his cigaret store at 9th Street and Market Place which became one of downtown Birmingham's most popular tourist attractions drawing many people from all over Alabama for lunch or entertainment during Saturday shopping trips around that time period Shore Drive ran parallel to 9th St & Market Place immediately south of courthouse square - still open today! Frazier died only two weeks after opening his store when a tornado struck downtown Birmingham on November 14th 1911 causing widespread damage including much roofing damage done by high winds throughout entire business district - storefronts were destroyed or damaged beyond repair! This tornado would become known locally as "The Hurricane" due to extensive damage throughout Downtown Birmingham including much lossy interior woodwork inside Chance Tower where many top management offices were located along with most manufacturing plants across several different floors/quarters within multiple large buildings adjoining each other resulting in total loss plus seriousinently severe injury & death among many citizens both old & young!
