In 1957, the University of Alabama moved to downtown Auburn from its original location on Beale Street in north Auburn. By 1969, Auburn had become one of the most racially diverse cities in America due to its large African-American population and expanding economy. Today, Auburn is an important cultural and educational center for the state of Alabama and is home to two universities - Auburn University (a private institution) as well as Birmingham–Southern College (a public institution).
