Auburn, Alabama was founded in 1817 by John A. Gregg and is the most recent of the ten original states to be admitted to the United States of America. The city of Auburn was founded on December 12, 1818, by James M. Caldwell and became a county seat on February 14, 1821. Auburn’s first mayor was Cephas Jones and its first secretary of state was Wm. H. Gadsden. In 1890, Auburn became one of twenty-six universities designated as “national universities” by President Grover Cleveland, making it one of only four American universities that have been awarded this distinction. In 1901, Auburn became an independent republic and adopted a new constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans although they were still considered citizens ofAlabama at that time. The university also began enrolling women in 1903 though they were not given full access to education until 1965 when Alabama State Legislature passed Act No. 936 creating the Women’s College at Auburn University under the guidance of then president William Tompkins III who renamed it the Auburn University School of Education after his wife Julia Lloyd Tompkins Carey (1902-1984). In 1907–08, Tigers football rival Alabama played its now discontinued annual series called "The Iron Bowl" here in what is now known as Bryant-Denny Stadium following a gift from Drury Lane Theatre founder Aubrey Bledsoe Ivey (1863-1954). In 1915–16 during World War I Battle for Sevastopol campaign against Bolshevik forces in Russia's Crimea region Tigers player Noble Coleman died while serving with Company K1 2nd Battalion 38th Infantry Regimentantigooners United States Army Signal Corps
