A mound found at Auburn Hills in 1865 may have been built by the Muscogee Creeks/Cobalt Folk Community. Spanish traders arrived in what is now Auburn around 1765, following their journey from Pensacola, Florida through Mobile Bay to present day Tuscaloosa County and Muscle Shoals region near Decatur, Alabama. In 1819 Seminole Chief Osceola led a successful revolt against English rule in what is now Jacksonville County; he was later rewarded with land grants that included what are now parts of Auburn and Montgomery counties. The first permanent white settler in what is now Auburn was James Hogg who purchased 3 acres (1 ha) southwest of Town Hall from John White on January 8, 1824 for $10 gold pieces payable within 12 months. In 1830 Hogg married Anna Cooks widow; she had married him two years earlier while living with her father-in-law Moses Cooks on Andrew Johnson's plantation near Peachtree Corners outside Mobile Bay where they raised chickens for eggs and flour subsidies from Governor Moore during Reconstruction period when African Americans were still not allowed to vote or own property without special permission from white landowners In 1840 Hugh Lawson bought 3 acres (1 ha) northwest of Town Hall for $20 gold pieces payable within 6 months; he also founded Lawson Academy which became one of America’s leading military academies In 1845 Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased 2 1/2 acres (0·9 ha) northwest of Town Hall for $40 cash plus 10 shares of Creek Indian Land Company worth an additional $3 per share plus interest; Hawthorne named his farm "Hawthorne" after General James Ewell Hawley who fought at First Battle Of Bull Run under Major General Robert Ewell Humphreys command In 1850 C Marshall leased 2 1/2 acres (0·9 ha) northeast corner lot #4 from J D Whitehurst for 50 years with 5% annual rent to be paid “in cash” Whitehurst donated this land to federal government as part of Chickasaw Nation Reservation whereupon it became known as "Auburn Township" or just "Township". In 1870 M A McClendon transferred 7 lots across road intersection east side lot 4 between Main Street and Railroad Avenue thence south to Railroad Avenue thence west side to lot 4 . He donated all Lots Nos: 7 thru 11 inclusive . From these lots proceeds were used to purchase Lots Nos: 12 thru 15 inclusive . On July 1st 1870 , Greenway Cemetery opened along with new courthouse ; graves were moved into this cemetery about 1898 The first Baptist church services took place there on December 16th 1868 Rev B Favell officiating Reverend Wm Dixon preached sermon followed by burial Thereafter meetings were held at home till building could be erected next door which did not become operational until 1895 Methodist Episcopal Church started services there November 9th 1892 Rev Wm Dixon officiating Reverend G P Hammond preached sermon followed by burial Mrs Fannie Dixon served as First Methodist Deaconess starting May 1897 Thereafter services continued inside old school house until 1906 when new school was built opposite Greenway Cemetery School board meeting held there February 21st 1907 approved plans - groundbreaking ceremonies occurred March 16th 1907 construction began initial cost estimate was $5 million

Auburn, Alabama is a small town in the northern reaches of the state of Alabama. The population was 12,000 at the 2000 census and it is considered an agricultural center with a rich history. Auburn has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and its first inhabitants were Hernando de Soto’s men who took up residence here in 1539. The name “AUBURN” derives from two words: Aubrey, meaning out beyond or high (a reference to the nearby hilltop where they built their first house), andurn, meaning white man. The first mention of Auburn in history was when Englishman John Smith discovered it on his trip through Alabama in 1702. At that time, Auburn was part of Creek Nation and was ruled by Chiefdom Fort Payne. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson captured Fort Payne and forced its people to move to what is now Mobile County. The fort served as a garrison until 1818 when it burned down due to neglect by local officials. In 1827, Auburn became one of four towns in Washington County which were organized under the newAlabama Territory System created by Congress following the Mexican-American War. For many years this area lay within Indian Territory although white residents gradually began moving into it beginning in the 1830s because of a number of advantages offered by the territory such as land grants and immunity from tariffs levied on eastern goods imported into Alabama from Georgia and South Carolina. Beginning in1845, Auburn experienced rapid growth due to cotton plantations being established along Highway 231 only three miles east of town limits – making it easily accessible for workers coming north from Huntsville and Tuscaloosa. Cotton production continued until 1865 when all but one plantation closed due to competition from other crops grown elsewhere in Alabama or moved south during Reconstruction era efforts to end slavery throughout America. Today much remains unchanged about life back then including most notably how today’s locals operate grocery stores located next door to schools; drive aroundabouts on older streets named after families who lived there before them like Highways 2 & 3; visit old churches sitting atop rise overlooking downtown; take walks around downtown squares filled with sculptures dating back centuries (many still present); enjoy concerts/festivals taking place at various locations every summer; see beautiful natural surroundings all around town courtesy of US Army Corps Of Engineers duty near river access points; etc.–all while keeping alive memories unique among many Alabamians deeply connected with their hometown since long ago
Auburn, Alabama was founded in 1836 as a town on the Mobile River. The town grew quickly and in 1839, it became an incorporated city. In 1865, Auburn Joint Union School District was created and Auburn continued to grow rapidly until it annexed neighboring cities in 1907. In 1927, the University of Alabama at Birmingham was established in Auburn and the city began to experience rapid growth. By 1959, Auburn had reached its current population size of over 120,000 people.
