Auburn, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Butts County, Alabama. The population was 126,512 at the 2010 census. Auburn is one of the most diverse cities in Alabama and has a rich history that can be found throughout its history. The first known inhabitants of what is now Auburn were the Timucua tribe. After their departure from Florida, they traveled north along the Appalachian Mountains and established themselves in what is now southeastern Georgia. In 1775, when General James Oglethorpe landed on Hilton Head Island to explore new territory for Georgia, he discovered what would become Auburn. He named it after his friend John Oglethorpe who had died in England two years earlier while exploring this area. Auburn quickly became a important center during the antebellum period because it was an agricultural town with access to resources such as timber and slaves. The town's importance declined during Reconstruction but returned after Reconstruction ended in 1877. It reached its peak during World War II with the growth of military annexes nearby including Signal Hill and Fort Myer Park before declining again after the war ended. However, recent efforts have restored much of Auburn's lost history through tours and events hosted by local organizations such as Auburn University's Antiques Roadshow Museum or Historic District Commission
In 1892, Auburn University was established as a land-grant institution, and in 1933 it became a research university. In 1938, the school merged with Alabama Polytechnic Institute to form the present day Auburn University.
