Atmore, Alabama is a town of around 9,000 people located in the Huntsville metropolitan area on the Alabama- Tennessee border. It was founded in 1871 by W.M. Atmore and his family. The first scopes were built here in 1892 by George Eastman, a United States optical manufacturer who also built the first astronomical telescope in America—the 12-inch Newtonian reflector at Johns Hopkins University. The town experienced growth during World War II as many civilians relocated to the area for military service or to take advantage of wartime production opportunities. The population increased again following the war, but declined after that until its current level of around 20,000 people in 2000. As one of only two remaining towns with its own school system (the other being Decatur), Atmore has continued to experience significant growth over the years, both economically and culturally. In recent decades it has become home to several significant businesses and institutions including Eastern State Penitentiary (now known as Holmes Jail), Atmore Regional Medical Center, and Parkview Baptist Church—all of which have helped contribute to its nickname "The City of Scopes." Nowadays, at least some residents continue their interest in scoping out local history through amateur telescope use; there are now numerous public telescopes available for observation in Atmore proper as well as surrounding areas from April through October every year!

Atmore is one of two towns in Marshall County that are both complete and unincorporated communities; the other being Covington. The first settler in Atmore was John Leland, who arrived in 1809. The town was named for John Atmore, an early settler and colonel of militia who served under General Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War. The town's first store opened on May 10, 1814. In 1824, a post office was established at Atmore with Wm. Hixon as receiver and postmaster. In 1830, Methodist Episcopal missionaries came to Atmore and began preaching Christianity there. In 1840, a school operated by Methodists becamegradeschoolschooling at present day White House Elementary School while also serving as an education center for local farmers children who could not attend public schools due to lack of space or financial limitations.. A second Methodist church (the First Baptist Church) opened its doors in 1840 on Main Street just east of current day White House Elementary School after being organized from members of the First Presbyterian Church which had been destroyed by fire six years earlier on October 15th . From 1841-1846 Revd James Spriggs served as pastor of both churches shareng with Revd Mclntosh Andrews until his death on September 26th . Reverend Spriggs left behind many important contributions including helping to create what is now known as “Atmore Park” which stretched along Nine Mile Road between Race Hill Road and Toole Avenue today’s intersection of Gaylord Avenue/White House Boulevard
The history of spotting scopes can be traced back to the early days of optics. In 1795, Nicolaus Cuhl, an engineer and scientist, designed a device that allowed users to view objects at a distance using a telescope. This instrument was called the "CuhlScope." The first real sighting scopes were built in 1825 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Antoine Lavoisier. These instruments used lenses and mirrors to focus light onto a small mirror or target and then use an eyepiece to View the object. The development of this technology allowed people to see things that they could not before. Around 1830, John Herschel started building telescopes with large objective lenses that could resolve details much better than earlier instruments. He also developed the first spectroscopic techniques for observers which allowed them to determine the chemical composition of celestial bodies. By 1840, many people had built telescopes and began using them for scientific purposes. One of the most famous sightings during this time was when Isaac Newton spotted Neptune on July 4th, 1690 from his own observatory in Cambridge England!

Atmore is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. It was first settled in 1819 by the Menard family. Atmore changed its name to Atmore in 1886. The population was 9,664 at the 2010 census. The town of Atmore was founded on the eastern edge of present-day Atmore Springs by John Menard and his wife Rebecca Fugate Menard in 1819. They named their new town after their eldest son Alfred (John's brother). The men began farming and trading land near what is now Gulf Breeze before migrating to Tuscaloosa County in 1824. In 1850, they donated three acres (1 km²) of their farm south of the community for use as a public school district. The Menards also helped create the first courthouse at Atmore and served as trustees for that building until it burned down in 1865. In 1886, When Arthur Hinton became president of Alabama Pacific Railroad, he ordered his engineer George Stephenson to build a branch line from Opelousas north to Atmore Springs with a view to linking this new railroad with Mobile Bay Railway Company mainline east of Mobile Bayou. A few years later, when steamboats began making regular trips up Mobile Bayou during summer months for trade purposes, passengers disembarked at what is now downtown Atmore and walked or took horseback rides inland for about two miles (3 km) before returning along the railway line back into town; this route still remains today as one portion of Woodward Avenue within downtownAtMORE
