Atmore is a small town with a single store and post office. The first settlers in Atmore were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1881. In 1902 the town had a population of thirty-four residents and was named for Lord Atmore, the British Ambassador to America at the time. The first school in Atmore was built in 1903 and served as an elementary school until 1955 when it became an high school. In 1970, Atmore Community College opened its doors with a total enrollment of seventy-two students. In 2006, AT&T donated land along State Route 231 to create a new community park that includes baseball diamonds, tennis courts, playgrounds, and more. The park is now known as White Sands Park after AT&T's corporate headquarters which are located nearby on White Sands Boulevard.

Atmore is a town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 23,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. Atmore was first settled by pioneers in 1802 and was named for General James Atmore, father of Commodore John A. Atmore and Colonel Isaac Asbury Atmore. The first post office in Atmore was established on December 12, 1813, under the name of Newbern. In 1819, the name change to Atmore after General James Hance's column invaded Mobile Bay and destroyed Fort Stedman as part of that year's military campaign against Seminole Indians near Pensacola Florida. On July 9th 1861 while Confederate forces were besieging Union garrison at Greensboro Arsenal two detachments led by Captain Nathaniel Prentice including Company C Fourth Georgia Infantry companies attacked Union soldiers without orders from higher command killing almost all (25) before being driven back with heavy losses; this action is often cited as starting the Battle of Gettysburg which ended with an Confederate victory over Union troops under Ulysses S Grant In 1865 when Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War era there was great demand for jobs in Alabama due to new technology that had been developed during war time such as locomotives and cars which were available only in Northeastern America at that time As a result many white businessmen left Democratic strongholds such as Atlanta and New York City to open businesses in Alabama This migration created a black majority town where people primarily spoke English or Spanish until African Americans began speaking English fluently during World War II when they brought their skills back into the country Today most people who live here are Anglo-Saxon or Hispanic with some German speakers present
