Atmore is a town in the Lower Alabama River Valley in northwestern Alabama. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, AL Micropolitan Statistical Area. Atmore's history dates back to 1853 when it was founded as a small community on the banks of the lower Alabama River by General Custer and his troops during their march from Fort Gibson to Chattanooga. In 1902, Atmore became an incorporated city and has since grown into one of the largest cities in Alabama with over 100,000 residents. The city's economy is based largely on agriculture and manufacturing. There are also several large medical facilities located within Atmore limits including Harman Medical Center and St Luke's Hospital. Atmore was founded on December 12, 1871 by the citizens of Atmore and its surrounding counties. The town sprang up as a result of the railroad being constructed through the area. The first post office was established in Atmore on November 15, 1872. By 1904, Atmore had a population of 1,500 residents and it became an incorporated city on May 5, 1906. On January 2, 1907, Atmore annexed the neighboring town of Hinton. In 1910, Atmore renamed itself to honor General James A. Garfield after his assassination in Italy. In 1928, Ashtabula County was formed from parts of Mobile and Montgomery Counties and Atmore became its capital. In 1933-1934, World War II saw great activity in the region with large numbers of soldiers moving into the area to fight in Europe. During World War II there were several industries located within Ashtabula County including aluminum production at Alcoa and shipbuilding at Ford Shipbuilding Company which produced many ships for both Allies and Axis forces during the war years 1945-1946 alone.
