Atmore is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Atmore is the county seat of Montgomery County. It is located on the Atmore River and has a land area of 54 square miles (137 km2). The first recorded mention of Atmore was in 1819 when it was called "Atchmere". The town grew up around cotton plantations that were founded by General James Wilkinson and others during the antebellum period. Cotton production declined after the Civil War, but In 1865, Atmore became one of two cities in Alabama to be established as counties with their own government. In 1901, Birmingham merged with Montgomery to form the state of Alabama; As part of this merger, Atmore lost its charter as a city and became an unincorporated community within Montgomery County. However, it regained its charter as an unincorporated community on November 1, 1955; until then it had been known as "Atchmere". In 1960, when Montgomery County Hospital opened its doors for patients facing surgery or trauma outside Ofiro Medical Center (now BJC HealthCare), southbound traffic onto I-5 was diverted onto US 31W instead so that emergency vehicles could leave the hospital parking lot directly adjacent to Highway 231A while residents who needed medical care could enter through corridors leading to Ofiro Medical Center from nearby towns such as Maysville and Hooverville. This system continued until 1966 when all hospitals in Montgomery County converted to electronic health records (EHR) systems
