In 1898 another Shotgun Trial came about when three men – Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1935), Leslie McFarlane (1862-1942), and Harry Blackstone Craddock (1863-1948) – sued American Arms Co., alleging infringement of their copyright on an 1895 invention called the “Broomhandle Shotgun”. The defendants initially contended that they did not infringe because their shotgun differed materially from American Arms’ weapon designation; however, after hearing testimony from witnesses including Edmond Bechet (the creator of ragtime music) and Lewis Carroll (who wrote Alice in Wonderland), Judge Augustus Biddle ruled against them on technical grounds only: American Arms had not shown how its weapon could be confused with any existing firearm classification within US law at the time it made its product available for purchase. This decision represented a watershed moment in shotgun litigation; since then most lawsuits over shotguns have been decided through evidence rather than through intellectual property infringement claims
