By 1907, there were five stores operating in Atmore; two groceries and three dry goods stores. In 1912, Cotton Mathers opened a feed store which became one of the most successful aspects of the community until it closed its doors in 1976 due to lack of customers or competition from larger grocery stores across the state line. operations gradually died out during World War II as much of Marshall County was used for munitions production; however, some residents still continued to live here through 1942 when all but two businesses closed because of bombing raids that destroyed much of downtown Decatur and other parts ofMarshall County). One business that survived the raid was Lumberyard #5 where Mrs. Fenton leased space from her neighbor for six months before finally selling it back to its original tenant during the war years because she could not find anyone who would take it on as a business again after Pearl Harbor (the attack on Pearl Harbor caused tremendous destruction throughout southeastern Alabama)). After World War II ended came economic recession which led many families to leave their homes for good although some stayed until 1970 when all but one store closed because no new businesses had come into town since then). A few members of this small group decided they wanted to keep their home so they formed The Gables Community Association Inc., which remains active today (since 1978) serving as an advocate for redevelopment within the boundaries set forth by city planners prior to annexation by Decatur City Council 9 years later.).
