Atmore is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, on the Atmore River. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County and home to Hinds Community College and Hinds State University. Atmore has been a center for textile manufacturing since the late 19th century, when it was one of several towns in southern Alabama to grow cotton plantations. The city lost its status as a major cotton town after production shifted to other countries in the 21st century, but it remains an important cultural and economic center in central Alabama.

The population of Atmore peaked at around 30,000 in 1960, but has since declined slightly. Today, the town features a small population and few businesses. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 564 people residing in Atmore proper (the incorporated part of the town), plus 349 residents living on adjacent farms that make up part of what is now Archer County. The population density was 15 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 806 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeupof Atmore was 98% White; 1% African American; 0% Native American; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%of the population
Atmore was founded in 1836 by John Atmore and his wife, Martha. The Atmospere cotton gin was built in 1844, and the community Post Office was established in 1847. The Atmospere Railroad was constructed through the community in 1851, and it became a factor in the development of Atmore. In 1865, the first church building was erected in Atmore. During the American Civil War, many soldiers from Atmore joined forces with Confederate forces to fight against the Union army. Some of these soldiers were buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in nearby Phenix City.
