The Atmores were the first white people to settle in the area. In 1907, they moved their family to what is now called "The Park" on the east side of town. Atmore's history begins with its incorporation as a town in 1881. The name Atmore was chosen because it occurred to one of the founders that anything other than "Atmore" would sound like a hunter had captured an animal and named it after himself instead of naming it after something honorable such as war hero or political figure. Belle Atmores played an important role in early Atmore history; she served as both mayor and recorder from 1886 until her death in 1903. During her time as Mayor, she spearheaded efforts to improve public transportation within the community and also worked towards creating new streets, squares, schools and businesses within the limits of the town at that time. In 1907, Belle Atmores relocated her family to what is now called "The Park," which became home to many notable residents including Booker T Washington (founder of Tuskegee Institute), Nathan Bedford Forrest (founder of Auburn University) and Alice Paul (socialist politician). Upon Belle's death in 1933, her husband George W. AtMORE Jr., took over management of The Park and continued its development until his own death in 1984. Today, "The Park" remains a popular location for events throughout the year due to its peaceful atmosphere and stunning views across downtown Birmingham toward Selma Avenue which bisects at right angles downtown Atlanta
