Atmore, Alabama is a town located in southern Baldwin County, Alabama. The population was 1,949 at the 2010 census. Atmore is located on the Flint River. It is part of the Mobile–Troy–Baldwin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in what is now Atmore were James Pidgeon and John Moberly who arrived in 1821 from Tennessee. They built a cabin on the banks of the Flint River and named it Poston after their patron saint, Patrick. In 1827 another group of Scotsmen, led by Alexander McGillivray, settled in Atmore and named it for their home country of Scotland: Ardrossan. All of these early settlers contributed to making Atmore one of the most important towns in south-central Baldwin County. In 1836 an act was passed by Congress creating Lauderdale County out of parts of Baldwin and Glades counties; however, no action was taken until 1840 when General Andrew Jackson became President and ordered all county lines moved westward as part of his reconstruction plan. The original boundaries for Lauderdale County were based on present day Mobile and Baldwin Counties but eventually included much more including most of what is now Atmore proper as well as parts of Butler and Perry counties east thereof (which are now part Of Marengo). This change not only increased Atmore's size but also made it one of the original seat cities within each new county line! After Jackson's death in 1849 both Lauderdale County and Mobile County were formed from his remains with Baldwin COUNTY taking over responsibility for everything northward into Mobile Bay while Ashtabula COUNTY took over responsibility for everything southward into Pensacola Bay (although this arrangement lasted only until 1860 when Ashtabula County dissolved because its land had been taken up by other counties). In 1861 during Confederate times at least three companies from Union cavalry stationed at Huntsville began operations under command Major General Nathaniel Lyon called "Cavalry Division West" which operated along portions today known as US 61/AL 162 etc., Ford Road passing through current day Muskegon Heights NE then continuing downriver past present day Enterprise before turning southeast to skirt around current day Pontotoc City nestled between Clearwater Beach on Gulfport Lake (now Biloxi) mainland Mississippi side & Holgate Island just outside apparent modernday Gulfport city limits). After some initial skirmishes near downtown Mobile they withdrew further back towards Huntsville where they remained until 1865 when they finally surrendered at Appomattox Court House following a siege that lasted 3 days! The Battle of Fort Donelson was fought adjacent topresent day Meridian Avenue between Fort Donelson National Monument & Ft Morgan State Park resulting in 8 killed including 5 officers including 2 generals leading Confederate forces
Atmore was first settled in 1835 by the Atmore family. The town was named after John Atmore, who donated land for the town's establishment. In 1847, the first school was built in Atmore. The town grew rapidly and by 1860, it had a population of 350 residents. In 1865, Atmore became an incorporated municipality and in 1871, its first library was founded. By 1907, Atmore had a population of 2,000 residents and it became a city on December 1st of that year.
