As a result, multiple businesses were destroyed within blocks radius around Barracks Annex; some examples include: Atlas Shoe Company (on Broad Street), Armour & Co., Brown & Wesson armory (on Church Street), Haggerty's Sporting Goods store (on Union Avenue), Pistolero Manufacturing Company (on West Broadway), Sam's Club Incorporated store (near Peachtree Road) among others In response to this intense crime wave, Mayor John Heisman created Athenians Gun Shop Committee which was charged with developing plans for creating an inner security wall around Barracks Annex; this ultimately led to enactment of City Code Section 2-3-5 which required weapons dealers within city limits sell only handguns possessed by citizens who are registered with city police department
