Atheneum, founded in Athens, Alabama in 1881 by Lucius Beebe, is the oldest continuously operating book store in the United States. Located on 11th Street between Constitution Avenue and Madison Avenue, it was once a mainstay of downtown Athens. In addition to selling books, Atheneum also published The Athens Times and The Athenaeum magazine. The current building on 11th Street was opened in 1957 by publisher John W. Whitehead. It served as the store's headquarters until 1978 when it moved to its current location next door at 111 E 12th Street. In 2002, Atheneum announced that it will close its doors for good on December 15th of that year after more than 50 years of operation. However, the store reopened on January 3rd of 2003 as an online presence for the store's customers located around the world with a focus on Americana and local history books from throughout Georgia and Alabama.
