The name "Athens" derives from the ancient and now vanished city of Mycenaean Athens in Greece. The Athenians were one of many civilizations that flourished in central Alabama before disappearing around 1200 BC. The first permanent settler in what is now Athens was John Hammond who arrived in 1820 from Illinois. He named his new community after himself – Athens-Hammondville (now part of Birmingham). In 1824 General James Custer fought on the American side during the Mexican–American War and captured an Apache Chief named Geronimo while he was living with his people near Huntsville. After the war, Greeks from all over America came to live and work at Greek Fort Custer on Mobile Bayou. They brought their beliefs and way of life with them when they moved to Athens in 1828. In 1830 Aaron Fenton set up a gristmill on Madison Avenue near present day Springdale Boulevard and began grinding corn for local farmers until he took over a larger mill on White Street about two miles north in 1830 which he operated successfully until 1848 when it burned down due to lack of care by its operators; however, this event helped spur development within the town center as more businesses opened up which has resulted in some significant alterations to downtown areas since then including an increase of restaurants and bars as well as increased retail space overall throughout downtown – making it one of the most active commercial districts within cities larger than 30,000 residents today!
