Athens experienced significant growth after World War II when its industries became involved in defense and aerospace production; Athens also became known for its produce and retail stores. The downtown area has since been renovated and revitalized with new businesses and restaurants such as Piggly Wiggly, White Castle, Chick-fil-A, BJ's Restaurants, etc., creating a mixed-use district with many cultural attractions within easy walking or biking distance for residents and tourists alike. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from New Orleans to Athens to help quell a slave uprising. The town was named for him and he donated land to the community. The townaldyachthes (town meetings) were held at various locations around the city until 1824 when it moved to its present location on North Meridian Street. In 1831, Athens became an all-white city under laws passed by Alabama's first white governor, James Mantle. However, African Americans began arriving in larger numbers during Reconstruction and by 1881 they had made up almost 10% of the population. They slowly lost ground over time as white residents regained control of local government and education institutions. The city's heyday began in the early 20th century with World War I and the war effort. Many businesses were founded or renovated during this time including Mack Trucks which built a large plant on North Meridian Street in 1923; Jones & Laughlin Steel which built two plants in 1925; Coca Cola Bottling Company which opened its first bottling plant near downtown in 1927; and Peoples Gaslight Supply Co., one of several suppliers for electric lights throughout southeast Alabama during this period. After World War II ended, Athens experienced growth as new industry emerged such as trucking and construction through both local companies like JMC Trucking Co., Inc., founded in 1948, as well as national firms such as AECOM (now GEICO) and Dow Corning Corporation among others. Crime rates also grew during this time with multiple homicides taking place between 1945-1966 alone within blocks of downtown Athens In recent years however, growth has slowed while jobs have been hard to come by due to competition from other cities across Alabama Downtown Athena is still home to many notable businesses including Pritchard’s Clothes store which opened its doors today on East Broad Street back when it was called “The Athenian” after owner John Pritchard ;the ABC television station KAIT (AM 620 kHz) – now known as WBFF – originally operating out of studios formerly occupied by Circuit City stores located just south of Center Avenue; First Baptist Church (); former State Reporters Club building next door (now apartments); Downey’s Barber Shop ();[and] numerous smaller businesses . Additionally there are several historic homes remaining such as Old Post Office Building (#1), Masonic Temple (#2), Chinese Theatre (#3), etc . Despite these challenges recently enacted annexation ordinances have failed to make significant advances towards reducing crime or improving infrastructure
