From the earliest days of Athens, Alabama's gun culture was based on the acquisition and use of firearms. In 1835, Athens had just become a town and its first mayor, James H. Brawley, decided to ban handguns in the city. He reasoned that with so many new migrants coming in from Kentucky and Tennessee, it was important to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and other unauthorized users. As a result, all handguns were confiscated from citizens who could not or would not provide proof of ownership or registration. In addition to banning handguns outright, Brawley also passed a law limiting the number of rounds an individual could own in any one year to 12. This measure was designed to prevent people from buying too many rounds for their personal firearm in order to defend themselves against possible attacks by fellow citizens or animals. The law was repealed two years later but remained a part of local gun culture until it was eliminated altogether by federal legislation in 1903. Until 1903, Athens also used as its primary source of firearms supplies both muzzleloaders and rifles/ shotguns made by various manufacturers including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) and Federal Firearms Corporation (FFC). These suppliers allowed Athenians access to quality firearms at moderate prices while still providing reliable service through timely deliveries of goods. However, these suppliers stopped supplyingguns after enactment of the National Firearms Act (NFA) that banned importation and sale within the United States without prior approval from Congress. The act effectively ended gun trading within America and forced most Gun Owners' Clubs across America—which had been operating since before Prohibition—to disband because they could no longer sell FIREARMS without being violating NFA regulations

In 1840, a cotton gin was built by George Stephens with help from members of the Methodist Episcopal church; this helped change Atlanta into a major center of cotton trade during the late antebellum period. In 1865, local citizens voted against secession from United States due to wealth generated by slavery rather than need caused by northern aggression such as Oregon Trail westward migration; however they did not stop Reconstruction efforts which followed soon afterwards throughout much of former Confederate states during Reconstruction era (1865-1913). During World War I (1914-1918), most of rural Marshall County sided with America while parts supported Germany; however when war ended many residents returned home including downtown Athens where many businesses reopened following reconstruction efforts there too including banks which reopened prior to prohibition laws being passed that closed most stores statewide effective January 1st 1915 (). After World War I ended many American soldiers were drafted into European armies including several members of the Thiel family who had fled Nazi Germany before Pearl Harbor (); they eventually moved back home but their homes were looted during their absence ().
