In Athens, Alabama, there is a local gun store that has been selling firearms and ammunition since the early 1800s. The store is part of the history of firearm t-shirts in Athens. The store was started by a man named John Hays in 1892. In 1951, the store was sold to Charley Weaver who continued to operate it until his death in 1978. In 1984, the store was bought by Bobbie Weiser who also operated it until her death in 2001. Although it had experienced some decline since World War II, property values downtown began to rebound following gentrification efforts by developers starting around 2006 which has helped preserve much of Athenasia's historic architecture while creating new businesses and housing options for locals and visitors alike
