After Korean War ended in 1953 there was a decrease in military activity at Fort Worth AAB but an increase in civilian activity because of school projects done at AAB that continued until 1961 when it closed as part of base realignment program announced by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara effective 1 January 1957. Since AFB closed most activities have been centred on nearby Arlington National Cemetery where army Reserve units are quartered while reserve duty overseas is conducted; however some personnel still maintain summer home at AAB site near Dallas also used for training purposes only since early 1960s

It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Athens was first settled by members of the Cherokee tribe in the late 18th century as part of their Trail of Tears journey from Georgia to Oklahoma. In 1853, Athens became a town when it was selected as one of three towns in Marshall County to become a seat on an initial Board of Commissioners created to organize what would become Marshall County. The town's origins may be tied to its location on the Hiwassee River; during periodic flooding episodes which occurred throughout much of this region, residents would build boats and ferry goods across the river for trade with Creek and other Indian tribes living along its banks. In addition to its role as county seat, Athens also served as an important center for education during Reconstruction following Reconstruction through statehood in 1865 and beyond. In 1902, Athens established itself as an educational powerhouse when it became one of only two towns in Alabama (the other being Tuskegee) to establish a public school system with high-quality vocational training programs that continue today. However, over time Athenians have grown increasingly hostile towards government services and have placed increasing emphasis on self-reliance and small-town values distinct from those found elsewhere in Alabama. Despite these challenges, however, many Athenians remain proudful locals who work hard day and night ensuring that their community remains strong despite some difficult times
