Anniston is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Anniston was founded as an agricultural settlement on December 20, 1819 by Jonathan Baldwin and others from nearby Decatur. The name "Anniston" derives from the Creek Indian word ანომერ or "anni-yi-taw", meaning 'place where corn is grown'. The first post office in Anniston was established on January 6, 1827. In 1829, James Fenton erected a small log cabin near present day Enterprise Road to serve as a temporary stagecoach stop between Decatur and Montgomery for mail traffic connecting communities in both directions. The first courthouse in Anniston was built in 1840 by judge John Auld and later moved to its current location on Main Street. The courthouse burned down in 1850 but was rebuilt with federal funds and opened to the public in 1861. The courthouse served as the seat of justice for Marshall County until it moved to Montgomery in 1907. In 1865, Colonel Thomas Gossett purchased land east of town from General William Tiddington for $1 per acre (0·7 cents per square mile). Gossett developed this land into what is now known as Gossett Heights which became a shopping center during the late 19th century when Anniston's railroad connections made it an important commercial center withinAlabamaand throughout Southeast America. During World War II American soldiers used Annaston Racetrack as a training ground for pilots while they were undergoing military training at nearby Tuskegee Institute before being sent overseas to fight in Europe and Asia.. After the war ended, many military veterans returned home and began restoring much of what had been lost during wartime infrastructure development such as schools, hospitals, roads and churches which were once located adjacent to racetrack property today including Annaston Township Government Center located just off Enterprise Road across from Gossett Heights shopping mall

Anniston is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. The community was founded in 1819 by John Crouch and James Wilkinson as a post office on the Mobile River. In 1826, Anniston was incorporated as a town under the name "Anniston." In 1907, it became an independent city and remains so today. The townsite that would become Anniston was located on what is now State Road 436 east of Mobile. A ferry crossing existed at this location until 1912 when a bridge was built over the river and the ferry ceased operations. The first settler in what would become Anniston Township (now part of Mobile) arrived in 1819 with John Crouch and James Wilkinson from England. They named their new home "Anniston" after their mother's birthplace, Annapolis Royal, Scotland. At first they engaged in fishing for small game near present-day downtown Anniston before moving to more permanent farming pursuits about two miles upstream on the succeeding year's date (1820). In 1821, land totaling 4square miles was donated toMobile County by Daniel Boone for use as a township courthouse square or for other public purposes including education and roads theretofore unknown or unimportant to settlers in that area; however no effort had been made to develop this area until Mr. Boone’s death some twenty years later! Town platting began shortly thereafter with lots measuring one mile square being offered for sale at $5 per acre finaly purchased by Jno Wilkinson who also laid out & platted much of known today’s neighborhoods including: East End which still stands afterOVER 100 YEARS! streets were laid out & BUSINESSES SET UP & ANNISTON TRADE CENTER BEGAN OPERATING IN 1902!!! This early annistonian success story is due primarily to Jno Wilkinson’s vision (& dedication) coupled with his brother & sons Dan & Jimmy who were hired locally by our founder Jno Wilkinson himself as planner/editor/typographer then “The Pressman” responsible for all printing operations starting July 1st 1902 thru December 31st 1951
