Anniston is a city in south-central Alabama, United States. The population was 38,898 at the 2010 census. Anniston is the county seat of Marshall County. The Anniston Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been in operation since 1897. The first people to live in what is now Anniston were the Creek Indians. They built their villages on the edge of a swamp near present day North Main Street and Old Spanish Trail (now US 41). European travelers passed through this area on their way to Mobile or Pensacola, Florida in 1702 and 1718, respectively. A post office called Anson was established at this location in 1828, but it closed in 1832. In 1836, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered all Indian Removal Acts be stopped because he thought they would cause more violence than necessary among Native Americans who had already suffered under Ulysses S. Grant's occupation for years prior! In 1837, General John Cushing laid out a town lot on which many residents erected homes between 1840-1848 with help from local Methodist missionaries known as "Cushings Men." After two years of construction, only about 150 houses were completed due to lack of funds and an unsettled climate that made farming difficult; however, Cushing's dream still lives on today as one of downtown Anniston's most popular attractions: The Governor Cotton Gin Building/Museum complex which opened its doors to the public on October 12th 1992 after a $5 million renovation project that included new exhibits chronicling the history of cotton gin production in Alabama & Mississippi during both world wars Anniston’s origins date back to 1817 when Captain James Robertson founded an agricultural settlement named Bellefontaine near present day Veterans Boulevard and US 72/Alabama 400 west of Youngstown; his settlement failed within a few years due to lack of support from local leaders including Mayor Goble who instead returned home with his family after only eight months there A second attempt by Robertson to establish a community further west was also unsuccessful; however, by 1830 another group led by David Garland had success building Fort Gibraltar along Mobile Bayou east side of I-10 just outside modern day Montgomery County . By 1840–1848 nearly 350 pioneers had settled here making it one of America’s earliest rural areas . However despite early successes settlers efforts development stalled until Federal land grants arrived via President Millard Fillmore’s Executive Order 9296 on November 1st 1850 renamed “Western Land Grant Act” which provided 740 acres northward extending into Marshall County for $3 per acre This western section - bounded by Griggs Road (northwest), Mobile Bayou (southwest), Claiborne Avenue ( southwest), Rossville Road (south) - became known as “Anniston Township” while eastern sections - bounded by Talladega River (northwest), Enterprise Rd (southwest), Eldridge Rd ( southeast) - became part Of Marshall County During Reconstruction period following Civil War almost all white men over 21 lost their right to vote cuz Black men could not serve without voting rights so they were forced into labor gangs called Goodyear Fairs where they worked six days off every week from March 4th 1865 until May 15th 1865 It was said that 80% percent deaths occurred during these fairs mostly due accidents caused by drunk drivers
