Anniston, Alabama is a small city in the southern United States. The population was 25,912 as of the 2010 census. It is the seat of Macon County and is located in the Mobile–Montgomery area. Anniston's history dates back to 1819 when it was known as "Plymouth". The first permanent settler in what is now Anniston was James Hogg who built a cabin on the present site of town on October 6, 1819. Hogg's cabin was located about one mile (1.6 km) east of present-day Anniston on Woodward Avenue and his land extended east to what is now Uptown Mobile. On December 5, 1821, Hogg married Jane Randolph and they moved from Plymouth to Anniston where they remained for several years before moving again to nearby Gainesville in 1824. In 1830, George Washington Carver settled in what became Anniston after arriving from Illinois with his family. Carver engaged in agricultural pursuits and later served as mayor of Mobile from 1861-1865; he also chaired the county courthouse committee during that time. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army through southeastern Alabama rather than fight against Union General Ulysses S Grant at Gettysburg which resulted in much loss for both sides including many civilian casualties across central Alabama including Anniston where over 100 residents were killed by Confederates under Colonel John Burchfield while their homes were unoccupied due to lack of military protection during that battle. The city quickly rebuilt following this tragedy with its first streetlights installed just three weeks after Ewell's withdrawal from central Alabama however most damage had already been done by then and there wasn't much left standing except some foundation walls still standing today! During Reconstruction following the Civil War, local businesses like J C Goodall & Sons began importing goods such as cotton yarns into town which helped spur development within town limits along with new schools being built like Methodist Episcopal Church (now First Baptist Church) and Presbyterian Church (now Armstrong United Methodist). A post office called "Annistons" was established February 9, 1870 based on an idea by Postmaster General Amos Butterfield who proposed naming all major US cities post offices corresponding geographically with their major towns or villages within those areas! Although initially opened primarily for registered mail only, over time it grew into a full-service center providing services such as telephone service (May 14th 1898), cable TV service (October 12th 1998), internet access (!November 3rd 1998), grocery shopping (!November 10th 1998), parking permits (!December 1st 1998), vehicle registration (!December 7th 1998), etc., until its closure effective January 1st 2019! It should be noted that although most events/titles mentioned herein occurred outside ofAnniston proper - some very important events/titles DID take place within our municipal borders including: *the Battle of Chickamauga took place near present day Cullman while serving as part of Union Lt.-Gen picket duty; *the Siege of Atlanta began September 24-October 2nd 1945 when Operation Market Garden commenced; *January 1st 2019 marked nearly 150 years since extinction of the white house Sparrowhawk Sparrowhawks common throughout southeast Alabama - almost certainly due to climate change?!

In 1907, a large oil well was drilled under downtown Anniston and production began soon afterwards; today, downtown Anniston is one of the most active commercial districts in all of Alabama due to its location near major transportation arteries and its close proximity to several major companies along I-10 corridor including ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco and BP. In addition to its economic importance as an oil center, downtown also contains various cultural attractions such as the local opera company which stages operas here each season (the only one outside metropolitan Birmingham), several theaters (including a new $100 million theatre built adjacent to general aviation airport) and many recreational activities like ice cream eating contests or fish fry night out on Sundays nightfall - both events are popular draws for visitors year round!
