In 1926, George Patton, Jr., then lieutenant general and then secretary of defense under President Franklin D Roosevelt, moved his headquarters from Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan to Montgomery where he soon became famous for leading Allied forces into World War II on behalf of America against Nazi Germany. In 1943, Patton was given command of United States Third Army which fought along with British army units across North Africa and Sicily before finally landing on Normandy beachesOperation Overlord - winning international fame and distinction that would be celebrated throughout his life including an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture (from 1944).
