The first white person to live in what is now Anniston was Martha Tucker, who came along with her husband John Springer in 1819. By 1830, there were more than 1,000 people living in Clarendon Township (now part of Marshall County) and more than 350 people living in Annaborough Township (now part of Decatur). In 1835, Randall County was created from parts of Shelby and Coffee Counties; Annaborough Township remained a part of Decatur County until 1911 when it too was transferred to Marshall County. With its new county seat at Annaborough, Anniston quickly became an important cultural center due to its close proximity to Birmingham and other major cities. In addition to hosting cultural events such as theatrical performances and readings aloud from books written by local authors, Annaborough also hosted annual agricultural fairs that attracted hundreds of visitors each springtime. After the war, Anniston declined as a manufacturing center but continued to grow as a bedroom community for Birmingham.
