It is located on Interstate 5 between Birmingham, Alabama and Mobile, Alabama. Many African Americans who had sided with their white compatriots during the rebellion fled to northern states such as Tennessee or Kentucky before being re-enslaved by Confederate forces when they returned home. Anniston quickly became an important center for cotton production due to its location on the Cahaba River between Muscle Shoals and Chattanooga (then part of Tennessee).
