The city was founded by white settlers in 1836 and incorporated as a town in 1881. Anniston has been the principal city of the Mobile-based Mobile–Troy-Anniston metropolitan area since 1998. In 2002, Anniston became one of only two cities in Alabama to be approved for inclusion on the United States Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS). As of 2020, Anniston had a population of 1,567.[1] The history of Anniston goes back to 1836 when white settlers arrived in what is now known as Chilton County[2] from nearby Troy, Alabama. They named their new community "Anniston" after General Andrew Jackson's daughter, Anna Belle Jackson House (1802-1884).[3][4] The first post office was established at "Annistone" on November 3rd, 1836,[5] and served until July 30th, 1840[6][7][8]. At that time it was located about 7 miles east of present day downtown Anniston. The first store opened in what is now known as First Avenue/Old Main Street on December 1st, 1836.[9][10] On October 15th & 16th 1830s two sisters by the name of Addie and Eliza Brown opened a blacksmith shop on Old Main Street which later becameknown as State University Boulevard/First Avenue intersection today. It should be noted that these early businesses were not self-service; stovepipe smiths did not open personal stores until well into the 19th century. During World War II both Ford Motor Company plants were located within walking distance of each other in what is now called Park Place Shopping Center bounded by Third Street NW to the south and Woodward Avenue NW to the north although they were not actually adjacent plants like they are today due to strict Army regulations forbidding vehicles with more than four axles to be parked anywhere near military installations during wartime period….. war production had turned many small towns into large cities overnight!… during this time much progress was made in developing transportation infrastructure including paving roads and building bridges…. One such bridge built during this time is currently known as “Old Bridge Road” which connects downtown Anniston with West Point Road just east of City Hall where US 41 meets HWY 82
