The Anniston Gun Safe Company was founded in 1899 by John Purdy and his wife, Emmalee. The company manufactured firearms safes and shotguns. In 1941, the company became known as the Anniston Armory Corporation. The corporation produced a wide range of handguns including pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns. In 1955, the Anniston Armory Corporation merged with the National Firearms Association to form the National Firearms Museum which is still headquartered in Anniston today.
Anniston is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 38,794 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Anniston is located on the Cahaba River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first Europeans to visit what is now Anniston were Frenchmen in 1682 who named it " Port-a-Logne". It was under British rule from 1702 until 1813 when it reverted to American control as part of the Treaty of Gadsden. In 1814, General Andrew Jackman's army destroyed Fort Jackson and drove the British out of Alabama. The town grew rapidly after that and by 1830 had 1,500 residents. In 1836, Huntingdon Robertson made Anniston his capital; he had earlier moved his operations to Mobile after being elected governor of Alabama in 1835. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down most of downtown Anniston while Union forces did not presence or participate due to fears of retaliation by Confederate Governor Robert E Lee. However much later historian Forrest McDonald wrote that "The burning [of] downtown Anniston occurred because General John C Holt ordered Confederate units there for training purposes only" Election day for the state legislature in 1861 resulted in a major upset as six local men - including future U.S Senator James Keneally from nearby Montgomery - won seats against four more distant gentlemen candidates (including two cousins). One reason for this victory may have been that many people living west of Birmingham decided not to vote because they felt their voices would be drowned out by those east of town (). After secession took place on April 12th 1861 without any warning or provocation from either side many citizens chose to stay put rather than face possible violence and retribution if seceded states should regained their independence

In 1881, Anniston was founded as the county seat of Covington County by a group of residents who were dissatisfied with the location of Mobile. The town was originally called "Anniston" because it lay on an old trading route between Nashville and Birmingham. In 1885, the name change to honor General William T. Sherman, who had won the Battle of Atlanta and been named Ulysses S. Grant's successor in office. The town became known as "Shermantown" after him. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major railroad routes, one linking Louisville and Chattanooga with Nashville and Birmingham, while also providing access to a number of agricultural products which were shipped down from Tennessee or Alabama. By 1900, Anniston had reached a population of over 50,000 people and began to develop into a major commercial center for central Alabama. As part of this growth, many new industries sprang up such as manufacturing plants for shoes and rubber products; lumber yards; coal mines; restaurant/bars/laboratories; pharmacies; insurance companies; and real estate firms. During World War II, much activity took place in Anniston thanks to its status as an important hub for military supplies arriving through nearby Muscle Shoals Airport. After the war ended in 1945, however, small businesses gradually went out of business as technology advanced and jobs moved elsewhere in Central Alabama. Today, Anniston is home to a few small businesses that continue to operate but are not considered significant economic engines within the community nor do they contribute significantly to its overall economy.
Anniston was founded in 1819 by James C. Anniston and his brother, John D. Anniston. The city is named for General Andrew Jackson, who spent a year in the area during the 1830s.
