Anniston, Alabama is a city located in the southcentral section of Alabama, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Birmingham. The population was 153,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Marshall County. The first permanent white settlers were two families from Georgia who established a cabin on what is now known as East Pratt Street in 1819. At that time, landings were made by traders and explorers seeking new markets for their goods and services. A post office was organized in 1827, but it did not take off until 1836 when John Capps opened an trading post on current-day Anniston Boulevard. In 1838, James Hance built a gristmill on present-day Main Street and named it after himself; this mill became one of the most important commercial operations in town until it closed in 1991. The area that would become Anniston was first settled by Creekside Cherokee Native Americans during the late 17th century as part of the traditional hunting ground of their tribe along the Tombigbee River near where Mobile now stands. Settlers began arriving here around 1800 and began farming maize crops and grazing livestock; rice farming developed only after 1840 when railroads came through town to bring people and supplies closer to major markets. By 1850, over 100 businesses had sprung up downtown; many continue to operate today including several jewelry stores, restaurants, a bank (the First National Bank until 1978), health care clinics (including one operated by Johns Hopkins Hospital), four movie theaters (the Anniston Drive Theatre being renamed The Cecil B DeMille Theater in 2004), two bowling alleys (one operators since 1948), three hair salons/beauty parlors/spas, four churches (two Baptist and two Roman Catholic) – all before incorporation as a city! Anniston experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city in 1912 with construction of such large projects as City Hall (now called Historic District) on Patton Avenue northeast of downtown and Enterprise Park just east of Patton Road – both still extant today! In 1916–17 Mayor Wofford Withers spearheaded an ambitious campaign to build an expressway through town which—in conjunction with other initiatives—resulted in ANNISTON becoming one of America’s fastest growing cities! Today’s skyline view includes some impressive examples of working class efficiency: Highland Furniture Company Building at 2nd Ave & Patton Rd., formerly Sears Department Store; State House Annex building at 1st Ave & Patton Rd., home to City Council chambers since 1907; Pritchett Mazda dealership at 4th Ave & Patton Rd.; local steel company's plant now housing ExxonMobil gas station civic boosters also created what are now popular nightlife destinations such as Live Oak Casino Resort & Hilton Hotel across from City Hall on 2nd Ave., which offers gambling activities under license from state gaming regulators ; Artspace Gallery right next door at 3rd Ave & Broadway also hosts art exhibitions throughout year
