Anniston, Alabama was founded in 1819 by John C. Frisbee and his family. The town was named for Annapolis, Maryland, where John Frisbee had been born in 1783. The Frisbees were the first settlers in what is now Anniston. The first store in Anniston was built on Main Street in 1825. In 1827, the town burned down but was rebuilt with a new store and courthouse. By 1830, the population of Anniston had grown to over 100 people. In 1835, the United States Congress passed a bill designating Presque Isle Lake as a navigable stream within Indian Territory for steamboats operating between Mobile and Washington D.C.. This made Anniston an important center for shipping goods between the two cities. In 1840, Governor James Fenton appointed Jno Pugh as the first justice of peace in the county of Bibb. During this time period, many African Americans worked as farmers or service men in local businesses such as stores and schools until they were able to obtain their own land and begin farming themselves later on in life. During World War II, much effort was made to keep troops from being drafted into combat without proper training or equipment which led to several injuries and fatalities among soldiers at nearby Fort Worth Army Air Field (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). As a result of this tragedy, many residents donated food and clothing to help feed servicemen during their stay; one such donation totaled $3 million dollars over five years! A large shopping mall called "The Mall" opened its doors in 1985 on Interstate 205 adjacent to I-64 near Shriners Hospital for Children when it became popularly known as "The Place". It quickly became one of the most successful malls ever built up north of Atlanta due to its wide variety of stores including anchor brands like Sears Canada (later Sears Holdings), KMart(), JCPenney(), Macy's(), Sears DEEP(later Menard's), Bagatelle Pizza (), H&M()., Burger King®, Pingree's Pub & Grill*, Coca Cola Refreshments* (later Quaker Oats)*(* closed **)

Throughout its history, Anniston has been an important center for trade and commerce, with several industries being developed in the town including engineering, printing and publishing, and blacksmithing.
