Anniston was founded in 1847 by George Washington and his family. The town developed around the Anniston Ironworks, which produced cannons and other weapons. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee retreated from Gettysburg and moved his army to outside of Anniston. The Union army burned down the ironworks in order to prevent it from falling into Confederate hands.
