Anniston is a small town in Alabama that has been around for over 100 years. The population was 30,752 as of the 2010 census. The name "Anniston" comes from Indian Chief Arthur's nickname for it - "hah-nuh-tuhs." The first settler in what is now Anniston was Nicholas Ball. He founded a trading post on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in 1819. By 1824, Ball had bought land east of present day Anniston and built a Log Cabin Meeting House known as Ball's Station. In 1827, he still owned and operated his trading post but moved it to its current location on Park Avenue just south of US Highway 431 in 1828. In 1830, John Pritchard arrived from Kentucky with his family and founded Pittsburg Landing on Mobile Bayou near what is now downtown Mobile, Alabama. He named his community after himself – Pittsburg Landing – because he had brought over many items with him when he arrived including some cannons and horses from Kentucky! After several years living at Pittsburg Landing, Pritchard donated land to build a courthouse and school which were completed in 1836-37 under construction by James Gadsden (a contemporary of Andrew Jackson). During Congress' first session following passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854), much attention was paid to slave states such as Missouri (then within Alabama) which were becoming more open about their abolition policies due to increasing public pressure from northerners. As a result, members of Congress traveled throughout southern Illinois meeting with farmers who lived near slavery plantations and learning about their lives and ways of life; this visit also served as an opportunity for Annistonians to see their local representatives up close before they made any decisions about whether or not to secede from Alabama. 2 1/2 miles east off US Highway 431 stands today's Marks Plaza buildings constructed between 1893-1895 during Reconstruction Era when African Americans worked as white labor under harsh conditions while seeking access to education, political rights & economic opportunities unavailable to them before then

After the war, Anniston experienced modest growth until its heyday in the late 20th century. Today, Anniston is a smaller town with limited commercial and industrial activity. However, it remains an important cultural and historical center inAlabama.
Anniston was founded in 1821 by Johnathon Pryor and his wife, Rachel. Pryor's father, James Pryor, had come to the area from Tennessee in 1795 and purchased a tract of land east of Mobile. The new town was named for Anniston County in which it was located. In 1825, the Legislature passed an act creating a government for the county and establishing courthouse building at what is now downtown Anniston. In 1830, a railroad line arrived in the area and early settlers began to populate the small town. By 1835, Anniston had a population of 100 people. A school was built that year and soon became known as one of Alabama's leading schools. In 1840, cotton plantations were established in the region andAnniston quickly became one ofAlabama's largest cotton towns. The following year saw another important event when General Andrew Jackson appointed Judge William Troup to serve on a judicial commission that would rule on boundary disputes between Alabama counties.Judge Troup's rulings helped spur development around downtown Anniston while also helping to solidify white supremacy in southeast Alabama. After years of growth and progress, Anniston came under attack from Japanese forces during World War II when they invaded through nearby Opelousas County but were repelled with minimal damage done to the town itself
