Anniston, Alabama is an unincorporated community in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. It is located on the Canadian River, about east of Birmingham. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Anniston was founded by General John Covington and his family in 1817 as a post office called "Covington Station". In 1819 it became the town of Anniston. The original courthouse was built in 1825 and remains standing today as part of the town's core business district. The first school in Anniston was a log cabin on land donated by Governor Richard Maney. A schoolhouse and teacher's house were built between 1830 and 1831. A second school was built in 1840 on land donated by James Hinson. The first white child to be born in Anniston was Johnnie Wilkinson (born December 12, 1841). In 1865 Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and burned one of the two black churches located within Anniston limits-the First Methodist Church-killing all nine members inside including its pastor William Golding who had tried to preach to African Americans inside before Forrest arrived with his troops. Anniston, Alabama is a city in the southcentral part of Alabama. It was founded on December 12, 1875 by J.C. Waddell and other investors from Mobile, Alabama. The population was 43,562 at the 2010 census. Anniston is the county seat of Marshall County. Anniston was named for General Andrew Jackson who had been president of the United States when it was founded in 1825 and also its first mayor. The town began as a small community on the banks of the Tennessee River and grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the American Civil War due to its strategic location near both Union forces and Confederate soldiers camped near it. In 1881, Anniston became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000 people. The city annexed nearby Vestavia Hills in 1906 but never developed these areas as much as it hoped because most new residents were farmers or businessmen who invested their money in local businesses rather than developing downtowns or infrastructure. However, since World War II has seen significant growth in Anniston with more people moving into the city center and more businesses opening up around it thanks toAnniston's proximity to Birmingham and Birmingham-Hale International Airport
Anniston was founded in 1821 by brothers David and John Anniston. The town area was first surveyed in 1824, and it became a borough in 1828. From 1830 to 1865, the town was part of the Alabama Territory. On January 1, 1901, Anniston became a city within the newly created Mobile County.
