The first settler to arrive in what is now Anniston was David Gentry on November 3, 1819. Gentry had come down from London with his family to purchase land west of Mobile Bay for $1 per acre. He named his new settlement after his wife's mother who had been born there -Annisborough meaning "sweet home." By 1825, the population of Anniston had grown to over 10 people and it continued to grow rapidly until 1830 when the Panic of 1837 struck the United States. This led to a decrease in trade and business activity which caused many families to move away from central Alabama during this time period including Gentry's own. In 1840, local resident John Hargrave purchased an acreage east of town for $8 per year from Gentry and began developing it into what is now known as Hargrave Heights. It wasn't until 1863 that another developer arrived - James Macdonald - who built a large plantation complex on what is now known as Highland Park Boulevard near present day Court House Square. This development led to increased traffic congestion and consequently increased taxes which were used fund public schools and other infrastructure projects throughout the surrounding area such as Streetsboro which later became Montgomery County seat following Statehood in 1907. Anniston experienced its highest population levels between 1860-1920 due largely to natural growth (the result of adding more residents along both sides of Mobile Bay) however during the Great Depression those numbers started declining again until they reached their current level around 1970s due mostly to migration within Alabama itself or outward migration if there were job opportunities available outside rural areas withinAlabama During World War II much progress was made towards restoring morale among troops stationed here thanks largely to Project Censored which aimed provide recreation benefits for troops living off base including free food, entertainment etcetera Although portions of downtown were destroyed by fire during operations such as V-J Day I remain proudest memory my father having me help load munitions onto buses before being driven back up several blocks while everyone else watched because we knew something great would happen next
