Anniston is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 38,592 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. In 1819, Anniston was founded by General Andrew Jackson as a result of his victory in the Battle of New Orleans and his march on Mobile Bay. The city became an important military and trade center during the American Civil War because it lay on both sides of the river that separated Union and Confederate armies. According to some sources, Anniston may have been founded by Paleo-Indians as early as 12,000 years ago. The first settler in what is now Anniston was James Robertson, who came to America in 1792 with his family from Georgia. He built a cabin on the present site of downtown Anniston in 1796. In 1819, general Jackson awarded land to John Aiken for settlement and development including what is now downtown Anniston In 1820, Judge Isaac Hill donated land east of town to establish an Agricultural College which would become Alabama State Normal School (now University of Alabama). The school relocated from its original location two miles west of downtown in 1827 when courthouse square were purchased for $6,000 (). In 1861, following the Mexican–American War, Confederate forces burned down part of town while retreating across the river; this event is known as "The Burning." Afterward much reconstruction took place throughout downtownAnniston with new construction beginning immediately upon liberation from Confederate rule During World War II production at nearby Arsenal Ammunition Plant increased by 50%, thanks to wartime shortages elsewhere and demand from allies such as Canada and Japan Following World War II many businesses closed or merged into larger companies; most notably Armour & Co., which occupied buildings along 2nd Street between Gateway Boulevard and Constitution Avenue until 1984 when it moved out onto Madison Avenue near US-1

It takes its name from the Battle of Anniston (December 12, 1864), which occurred near present-day downtown Anniston. The first permanent settler in what is now Anniston was James Robertson, who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on the banks of Mobile River. A post office called "Annistone" was established in 1801, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson appointed Major Elisha Mitchell as surveyor for Creek Nation land south of Mobile River. In 1824, Colonel John Maney purchased 2 tracts of land east of Mobile River from James Robertson for $10 per acre. The area that became known as "Maney's Fork" developed around this purchase. A schoolhouse and store were built on the site by 1830; however, it wasn't until 1840 that an arsenal (annihilator) was constructed to shoot cannonballs into the ground to form an ammunition dump for local farmers and militiamen fighting against Seminole Indians in what is now Baldwin County. By 1860, all major handgun calibers were available in multiple gauges (12g through .45ACP), so shooters could now choice between higher velocity rounds based on their personal preferences. As technology improved, so too did ammunition design; in 1885 Winchester introduced an improved hunting round called the Super-X that was capable of hitting targets up to 100 yards away! Since the dawn of civilization there have been several advances in firearm technology that have led to increased accuracy and firepower; however, one important advance that largely responsible for these advancements was propellant powder development. When cannonballs became sufficiently large enough - around 12 inches diameter - they no longer traveled at low speeds across hard surfaces like earth or stone but instead flew through air at high speeds due to their expanded size when passing through a muzzle brake (like a shotgun breech). By increasing the speed at which these balls could travel they were able to arc further towards their target before impact; this gave cannons greater accuracy over earlier artillery systems which relied upon slower-flying shothells

The name "Anniston" comes from the Creek words an'tini and ta-ni-ka (water). The first white inhabitant of Anniston was John Newton who arrived in 1792. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson founded what would become known as Fort Jackson on the Mobile River to protect settlers from Indian attacks. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army into central Alabama and began construction of Fort Donelson near present day Anniston. On November 8th of that year General Ewell's army was defeated by Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant at Pea Ridge outside of Birmingham, Alabama; this event is considered one of the bloodiest battles in American history with over 6,000 casualties on both sides involved. After the battle, many soldiers were captured and held at nearby Cullman Barracks until they could be exchanged or released without trial. After the end of World War II in 1945 most residents left for various reasons such as job opportunities in Tennessee or Illinois or for homes elsewhere in America including West Virginia and Florida where many had landed after being shipwrecked during Prohibition years which ended with repeal of prohibition in 1933
