Alexander City is located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, about 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Birmingham. The city was founded by General James Robertson on the former site of present-day Alexander City in 1836. It became a town in 1846 and a city in 1907. The first white settlers in Alexander City were Major Isaac Asbury and his family, who arrived around 1835. A post office was established at Alexander City in October 1836, and mail continued to be sent from the town until April 1840. In December 1837, the citizens voted to incorporation as a city under the name of "Alabamah." On July 26, 1907, Alexander City became an official municipality within the state of Alabama. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), James Robertson served as general during what is known as the Battle of Alexander City; he lost an arm at that engagement. After the war ended, Robertson returned to Alexander City where he engaged in various business ventures until his death in 1880. He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery there with his wife Sarah McIntoshRobertson and their three children: James H., Margaret W., and Alfred Otho Jr.. The first schoolhouse inAlexander City was built on land donated by Captain John Pemberton upon his arrival in town on October 17, 1830. The school operated for one year before being moved to its current location on Main Street near today's pharmacy building soon after.An additional school was built on Court Square between Union Avenue and Park Avenue around 1850 before it too closed due to lack of students or funding. In 1865 another school building was erected on North Market Street which served as both schools for adults and gradeschoolers up until 1903 when it also closed due to inadequate finances/opportunities for further development/useage .In 1914 a new high school campus opened across from downtown with gymnasiums/multilingual language classes being offered through 1927 .Today’s Elementary School Museum has been open since 1984 displaying original materials such as textbooks & tools used during teacher instruction
