Alexander City is a city in north Alabama, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The city was settled in 1827 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named it Alexander after General James Alexander, an American Revolutionary War general and author. The first post office in Alexander City was opened on December 2, 1830. In 1851, the town had a population of 1,500 and it became the county seat in 1857. The communitys growth slowed during World War II because of rationing of food products and lack of available land for housing development. In 1960, Alexander City became one of six communities within the newly formed Marshall County when that county was created from parts of Jefferson and Montgomery counties. In 1978, the city voted to become an independent city with its own mayor and council members. A new municipal stadium was built in downtownAlexander City in 1987 and is used today by the local high school football team as well as various other events including concerts and rodeo events
