During Prohibition, many businesses were closed within Alexander City because they were not compliant with state law prohibiting alcoholic sales without a liquor license: some businesses reopened after repeal while others went out of business completely. The post office closed permanently on November 3, 1951; however, postcards continued being sent until about 1973 when all mail stopped beaming into town because of an antenna problem at the old site (now known as Fourth Street). AlexanderCity prospered until around 1970 when abandoned factories began to fill up with trash which reduced property values; however, there has been recent redevelopment efforts that are bringing new life back to downtown Alex

The city peaked at around 200 residents in 1944 before gradually declining over the next few years due to lack of war-related employment opportunities withinAlexander City itself as well as reductions in local farming activity which led to increased competition for land with other nearby towns
On January 6, 1871, Alexander City was founded by three men. Joshua Bounds, James A. Woods and John Troup were the founders of Alexander City. The town was named for General Lafayette Alexander who fought in the American Revolution.
