The Alexander City Gun Club was founded in 1892. The club enjoyed a long and successful existence until it disbanded in 1959. In that time, the club operated a range, several pistol shoots, and hosted many local meetups and tournaments. The range served as an important community resource for residents of Alexander City for decades. Gun target history in Alexander City began with the first shooting at the club on November 2, 1892. That day, members of the club arrived at the old courthouse to shoot at targets donated by Reverend Wm. Atherton. The first season of rifle shooting was also held at the court house, but due to its condition there were only a few rounds fired each night. On December 3rd, 1892,Alexander City’s first pistolshoot took place from 6-8pm at the Masonic Lodge Grounds on Main Street South/US 41A intersection just south of town limits. There were no rifles available for purchase that evening so pistols becamethe norm for these events . On January 13th 1893 Rev Wm Atherton donated two shotguns to be used as part of a pistolshoot event which took place outdoors on Lewis Field near present day Patton Boulevard . This inaugural event was attended by seven individuals and resulted in three hits out of ten shots fired! It should be noted that rifles were not yet available for purchase or use during this time period
