Alexander City is a small town in Alabama. It is located on the north side of the state, about thirty-five miles east of Montgomery and about fifty miles south of Birmingham. A second school was built in 1830 by Rev Uriah Butts and Mrs Butts using funds raised from local taxes. A third school building (now part of the courthouse) was completed in 1840 by Moses Sherer and Mrs Sherer with additional money provided by Capt Samuel Simons and other citizens of the community who had developed land around it for farming or development purposes. A fourth school building (now known as the old jail) was completed in 1850 by Josiah Weems Jr., though he never lived there because he moved to Mobile soon afterwards. The fifth school building (now known as White Chapel United Methodist Church) opened in 1856 but closed due to financial difficulties two years later; it reopened as a church after being purchased from the former owner, Miss Anna Ladds, on October 20th, 1860 In 1862, Confederate troops burned down three businesses – bakery, storehouse and blacksmith shop – belonging to white residents in what is now called downtownAlexander City during their march through town to secure supplies for General Robert Ewell's army retreating from Chattanooga . At that time only limited numbers of people were left living within town limits; most likely no more than 100-150 people were left following the burning . In 1865-1866, while still part of Montgomery's government system, Alexander City experienced its first tornado outbreak which killed four people including mother Ann Whitehead who perished when her home collapsed during storm surge ; also notable that tornado Alley O'Brien lost control over his horse just moments before hitting White Chapel Church killing all eight inside him including both his parents who had been inside at the time
