Alexander City, Alabama is a town in Hale County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hale International Airport local area. Alexander City was laid out in 1871 by J.M. Alexander and named after his brother-in-law General James Hancey Alexander. In 1892, the first post office in the town was established; it continued to be called Alexander until 1907 when it became known as Indianola. The name change may have been related to the presence of an Indian reservation two miles east of town. A cotton gin and mill were built in 1907 on south Main Street by J.M.Alexander's son Archibald Acheson and his wife Anna Stephenson; they produced cotton until 1922 when they closed down due to lack of customers and financial problems caused by World War I prices that had decreased since production had increased during wartime times when prices were higher than they are today because the war had no real impact on home demand for cotton goods which now account for about 70% of total exports from Alabama The old mill site is now used as a community center with a playground, swimming pool, movie theater, large garden area full of flowers & vegetables, dance/community hall/multi-purpose room (now used as classrooms) and five adult trailers belonging to former students who attended school here during their teenage years from 1914 through 1966 . There has also been some renovation work done here recently such as new roofing & windows among other things that should make this place more user friendly over time
