Alexander City is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by General Alexander Stephens and his family as a trading post on the east bank of the Coosa River. In 1840, it became the town of Stephensville when Stephens' father-in-law, John Log Cabin, bought land north of town. In 1851, Alexander City turned its attention to education and built a schoolhouse and other buildings. A new courthouse was also built that year. The first settlers in Alexander City were Jno. Fenton and his wife Nancy who arrived in 1836 from Tennessee with their three childrenTieman (1837-1892), Emma (1839-1904),and Hargrave (1841-1920). They soon after erected an log cabin for themselves on what is now Main Street near where Interstate 65 meets County Route 466 today. In December 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's forces burned down the old courthouse which had been used as a Union hospital during the American Civil War; only 11 inmates were saved before it caught fire and went up in flames; all but four of those inside were burned alive. After the war ended in 1865, Alexander City grew quickly due to numerous families moving into its townsite from nearby Decatur or Chattanooga due to job opportunities available there during Reconstruction era America. By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in Alexander City including many farmers and mechanics who had come overland from Tennessee and Georgia looking for work following the end of hostilities. A new courthouse was completed in 1871 by contractor Wm Silliphant which served as both local government center for central Tuscaloosa County until 1907 when that office moved to Montgomery under then Governor George Wallace's administration efforts to create racial segregation within Alabama's government structure along lines similar to those being implemented throughout much of southern Mississippi under Ulysses S Grant years earlier while he was secretary of war Democrats opposed his appointment primarily because they saw him as another example of white independence attempt thwarted by black Republicanservatives seeking Republican presidential nomination against him at that time becoming known nationally as "the Scandalous Stonewall Jackson". The building still stands today on Main Street opposite former local grocery store/gas station/cafeteria Today’s First Baptist Church housed therein having been replaced by a new building constructed shortly thereafter using state funds not long after Wallace took office despite opposition locally among some citizens claiming financial gain could have come ONLY if property tax increase followneted - this never happened however with downtown business continuing unaffected unchanged thereby demonstrating once again how politics + money = success especially when controlled by ones own classically trained elite few
