Alexander City is a small town located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The Alexander City Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first permanent settlers in what is now Alexander City were James and Betty White who arrived in 1820 from Ohio with their three children. They built a log cabin on the edge of present-day downtown and named it "White's Landing." When they passed away, their son James took over the family business and continued to grow it until his death in 1892. In 1902, he married Martha Fenton and together they founded the First Baptist Church which still exists today as one of the most prominent churches in Alexander City. In 1861, when Alabama became a state, Alexander City became its capital. The territorial governor set up government offices here and people began to arrive to establish businesses and build homes. By 1865 there were more than 100 residents living in what is now Alexander City including several proprietors of businesses such as Gadsden cotton ginner John Packard (1811-1876), Jno Waddell (baptized October 12, 1793 – died November 5, 1865), Elisha Cook (died December 9 1875) who operated a saw mill on Post Road near present day Gates Mill., Pte Augustus Higginson (born October 3rd 1830 - died February 16th 1890) also an officer with Confederate Army during War Between North America & Mexico), Isaac Banks (baptized December 15th 1807 - died January 10th 1880) owner/operator of two grist mills at Third Street and Laurel Avenue). One significant event that occurred during this time was when General Robert Ewell's army invaded southern Alabama under General Jubal Early on July 14 1862 while Mobile was under siege by Union forces led by Ulysses S Grant which forced Early to retreat back into Georgia where he took refuge with his military forces being transported across Lake Pontchartrain by steamboats or wagons then marching through Chattanooga towards Atlanta after heavy fighting between Union troops commanded by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest vs Confederate Brigadier General John Bell Hood was repulsed at Battle of Chickamauga six days later on September 23rd 1862 resulting in some 1 million casualties for both sides with over 200 thousand men killed or captured including Generals Sherman & Johnston who had been leading an effort against Confederate capture of Chattanooga prior to these events taking place President Andrew Johnson making him responsible for having failed to save Chattanooga although he himself had been looking for ways to do so
