Alexander City was first settled by Yankees in the early 1800s during Reconstruction after the Civil War.about 1840 A white man named Waddell settled around what is now known as White Hall Creek near present day Alexander City He built a cabin about 4 miles south of where he currently lives with his son John Waddell In 1840 he also erected a log courthouse called "The Old Courthouse" which still stands today along with many other local buildings such as a jail and schoolhouse that were all used until recently when they were sold off to private individuals or businesses In 1883 there was another Yankee settler by name of Phelps who arrived in wagon train with his family from Ohio After living here awhile Phelps decided it would be best if he moved out so he founded what is now known as Pruitt Station next door to White Hall Creek which became known as Pruitt's Landing This place had some stores, two houses & a church before it burned down in 1906 during a severe storm that caused much damage across much of central Alabama

The city is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area and is bordered by Hoover to the north, Tuscaloosa to the east, and Decatur to the south. It lies in what was once Creek Nation territory and became an incorporated municipality in 1907 when it annexed portions of neighboring Tuscaloosa County. The first European settler in Alexander City was James Moultrie who arrived in 1798 with his family from South Carolina. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Moultrie's Fort". The town began as a farming community with crops such as corn, beans, rice, apples, grapes and tobacco grown for sale or export to other parts of Alabama and Georgia. In 1821 Alexander City had a post office which served as its own ZIP code until it was combined with Hoover into one ZIP code in 1990. In 1907 Alexander City annexed portions of neighboring Tuscaloosa County so that they would have their own government separate from those of Decatur (to their south) and Hoover (to their east). Today Alexander City is known for its cotton plantations which continue to be a major industry today despite being production centers for other industries such as manufacturing since 1970s including trucking companies moving large volumes of goods across country through Montgomery County including here into downtown Birmingham during later years when Interstate 495 bypassed town making transportation much more difficult then before; many people consider this period also dubbed "The Great Dismal Swamp Years" due to lack of jobs outside town while Downtown Birmingham reverted back to being primarily an agricultural center until recently becoming more popular again thanks largely to new development around Town Center mall across rivergate which has helped revive downtown just beyond that park although some fear this redevelopment will bring increased development along I-4 95 corridor adjacent urban sprawl still taking over main streets economically threaten original character & architecture
