Alexander regained control of the city in 1880 and continued its growth until he died in 1921 at the age of 82 years old. His brother James H., who succeeded him as mayor, served until his death in 1951 also at 82 years old. After James H.'s death, Homer Easley took office as mayor for three terms from 1951-1963 before becoming governor of Alabama when George Wallace won the Ulysses S Grant presidency in 1968). In 1963, Easley became mayor again until he resigned due to health problems which led to an election campaign between former Hamilton County sheriff Donnell Hilliard (D) and state senator Lloyd Boren (R). As per results of that election, Hilliard was elected Mayor with 50% of the vote while Boren received 40%. When Hilliard became Mayoralty 3rd term no one wanted anything do with him because he didn't care about anything except himself instead they just wanted money outta town so they could make more money elsewhere... After 3 terms as Mayoralty I had enough so I stepped down effective date February 1st 1966....... This left a power vacuum so Donnell Hilliard ran unopposed for Mayoralty 4th Term effective date March 15th 1966.......Hilliard won handily with 60% of votes cast
